When I get stuck in my vicious cycle of negative self-talk, I set myself up to want to yell and scream to let out my personal pain, frustration, and disappointment.
Yes, I lose a lot when I think negatively. In fact, all I gain is a self-fulfillment of exactly what I tried to avoid in the first place. When I started The Orange Rhino Challenge, anytime someone said something to me along the lines of “oh, the power of positive thinking,” I rolled my eyes, struggling to totally believe the cliché. Yes, I do believe in being positive and I do believe it helps, but I didn’t believe it was the “be-all and end-all” to solving problems and overcoming challenges. And I still don’t believe it is; I am a realist.
That said, this challenge proved to me that the more positive I am with my thoughts about what I can achieve, the more I achieve. The days that I say to myself, “I can do this. I will choose to love more and yell less,” are infinitely easier and more successful than the ones where I say, “ARGH! I can’t do this!” Thinking positively does help me achieve more positive results; it is very contagious.
And being a realist, and from playing The Vicious Cycle more times than I care to admit, I can say that sometimes it is outright hard to think positively! It is hard to stop being mad at my son for his behavior and it is hard to stop being mad at myself for my behavior. But choosing to think positive thoughts toward myself and show positive behavior toward my son—well, it is necessary if I don’t want to yell. So no matter how hard it is to accept responsibility for stopping The Vicious Cycle, whether it is with my sons or with myself, I will keep trying so that we can start playing The Victorious Cycle game of loving ourselves, each other, and life more.
